Hey all, I'm a newbie looking to get into what seems to be the awesome sport of windsurfing. I'm an ex-hobie cat sailor but i want to switch over to windsurfing. To get to the point, is the following gear suitable for a beginner and what would you reckon it's worth:
Board: Hi-Fly Free 282cm 145ltr Mast: Freeride 15 4300mm Boom: Adjustable 170-220 Sail: Neilpryde 5.4 Harness: Rambler M
Thanks. |

Yes that should be fine to start with. It might be a bit difficult at the very beginning but will be your light wind board for later on. The sail will do OK for the beginning but might be too small for the winds you will sail in with a board that size later on.
We do windsurf lessons in Langebaan on the lagoon so if you are close it might be worth doing one.

Below is a quote from another web site. Just to give you an idea what you can expect if you go all the way
Windsurfing is not just a sport, nor is it just a pass-time or something to do on a weekend, not to me anyway. It's a partnership between man and the power of the elements, a relationship with the wind and the water. Windsurfing is like swimming with dolphins, or riding on the back of a lion. It's humbling and empowering at the same time. It's everything. People are forever changed by windsurfing. It alters your priorities and it fills you with a sense of awe. Suddenly, the importance of your bank balance and the car you drive diminishes. The only suit that matters is a wetsuit. People's opinions become less important. Investment-trust pish-pash, anti-ageing cream big whoop. The allure of the city lights grow weaker and the call of the wild grows stronger. Bad weather is good weather, terrible weather - even better. When the parasols are hurredly removed from the beaches in the advent of a storm, when the sky and the water seems furious and sand stings your legs, that's when the windsurfers appear. So if it seems that we're uninterested in your board meeting, or our glaringly absent faces betray our indifference to your marketing pitch, it's not that we don't like you, we just don't care. We answer to a higher calling...

I looked up the board in Google, search for images, there are a few sites that have reviews etc. The German review (windfinder.com) seems favourable, says it is a great board for beginners, wide enough with enough volume to learn. Anthony (Cape Sports Centre) is probably right, will be a bit wobbly as your first board, but at least you won`t outgrow it too quickly. Sail size is ok for learning, a bit small for that size board though. But once you have all the kit, another used sail (bigger) would be a good idea. You asked what we think it`s worth - depending on condition and age, could vary a lot. Don`t pay more than 60% of new values, so phone the board shops and ask for a price on an entry-level mast, boom, mastbase, harness, and comparable sail. Rough guess would be mast R800, boom R800, sail R1800-R2500, board R2000-R3000 (it is an older model so price should be around 30% of a new board.) Those are just an idea of what you might find used kit for, you could do a lot better, or a lot worse. I would go in to Bay Sports and / or Cape Sport Centre and ask as well, they will have a lot of different kit at varying prices, so you can get what you`re looking for and tailor it to suit your budget. |
