Homestead Lake
Homestead Lake.

Directions: From Johannesburg, take the N12 east to Benoni. Take the
Atlas Road offramp and turn left (North) at the robot into Atlas road.
At the First robot turn right (East) into Mercury Road. From there turn
right (South) into Byron Street and then immediately right (West) again
into De-La_Mare Street which leads right to the lake.

General

Access to the lake is free of charge.Camping and fishing are prohibited.
There is plenty of grass and shady trees which makes it quite a nice place to take the family. There are swings and stuff for the kids too.
Dam has braai facilities and ablutions. I would however not recommend the ablutions for the feint hearted. Best is to do your business before you get there or else go to one of the filling stations in Mercury Street.

Homestead is very deep in the centre where the original river was, in excess of 20m, but towards the sides it is shallow.
The size is approx 1km (measured by car on the road adjacent to the lake.) and 800m wide, oval shaped.
In the shallows the ground is a bit rocky so be sure to wear booties, unless you're launching from the Benoni Sailing Club which has nice soft sand.

Prevailing Wind Conditions

Prevailing wind North (Which is also the best wind), is constant.
January-March wind tends to be East, and lighter. Storms come from the West with strong winds. It is safe, as any windsurfer can swim to any shore if in trouble.
Wind can tend to be gusty as the lake is in a residential area and thus surrounded by houses and trees.

Benoni Sailing Club

Membership fees for the Benoni Sailing club are R390.00 per family per year. Any interested person can come to the club any Saturday or Sunday for further information. Contact telephone is 011-849-7998. There are full club facilities, showers, clubhouse etc. Members may come during the week.
