Knysna lagoon can be sailed in SE or NW conditions. SE is more consistent as the wind enters the lagoon via the heads. SE wind is a summer wind. NW is usually pre-frontal and is gusty. Can only be sailed at high tide.
There are several sailing spots :
1. Off the beach at Leisure Isle - nice setting, awesome scenery. Run across the lagoon is relatively short (500m) and can get very choppy especially when tide is flowing out and wind is in opposite direction (SE). Be careful for boats and pleasure cruisers who do not give way to sail. Also, for novices, tidal movement can cause a lot of problems as the current can flow quite quickly.
2. From the boat harbour next to the camping site at Brenton on Lake (on the western side of the Lagoon) - head out of Knysna towards George. Just after crossing the bridge, turn right and follow the road back under the bridge. After several kilometers, take left turn to Brenton on Sea. At T-junction turn right and parking spot is about 500 meters further on. Long run across lagoon towards water front.
