Palm Beach
Palm Beach (750 km from central Johannesburg)

Prevailing Wind Conditions

Same as Trafalgar.

Camping Facilities

Non at the spot, but just 1 km away, is a camping resort called
'Greenheart', early booking is essential.
A Cafe and restaurant are alongside the Greenheart resort.
The nearest town with petrol is Munster, 3 km further south.
Braai and wash-up facilities are available in the clearing by the beach
next to Mpenjati nature reserve.

Directions

From Durban, take the South Coast highway, as if en-route the Wild Coast.
Turn left at Palm Beach turn off just after driving over Mpenjati lagoon
bridge. (1½ hour travel from Durban)
Follow road immediately right, then left, right, and left after turn-off.
When you see the Palms flats (white and blue roofs) on your right,
continue straight to a clearing with the nature reserve on your left.
There is sufficient grass to rig; then carry equipment down wooden walk-way.

Launch Instructions

When you exit the wooden walk-way, walk diagonally left so that you are
in line with a white column near the shrubs. This is the safest launch
area in both directions.

Launching further left than the beacon results in massive shore break,
as there is no reef further out to break the large swells down.
Launching too far right of the walk-way, means you flirt with a shallow
rock shelf, close to shore, which if dumped on could cause some bodily
harm.

The mid break at Palm Beach is great fun, the outer break can be huge at
times. There is also a reef far out that can sometime launch some big
stuff unannounced at times. This catches one totally unaware, and
usually dumps you head over heals, leaving your equipment very close in
shore and a long swim.

There are NO shark nets, this in my opinion is great, no wipe outs in
the impact zone by hitting the net at a bad time. There probably won't
be nets at Palm Beach for a long, long time as the reef causes waves to
break far out to sea, and there are very few bathers.
