Description: Sailing at Platboom is every purist’s dream - apart from the cost of getting into the Cape Point Nature Reserve - as it is a truly wild location, unspoilt sailing at its best at one of the few places where there is a good chance of sailing on your own.
Wind Conditions:
SE: Port Tack
The South Easter is usually at its strongest in the Cape Point area. I can’t remember the number of times Bloubergstrand has been dead calm, while there has been a 30-40 knot gale blowing at Cape Point. The South Easter often reaches gale force here, and can necessitate the use of 3.5’s and other minute sails on some of the really windy days.
NW: Starboard Tack (sometimes offshore)
Make sure that you know what you are doing when you sail Cape Point with a North Wester blowing.
Wave Conditions:
The waves are generally quite large, as there is a very wide swell window. In winter, when the NW blows, there can be days with really huge swells, usually caused by storms out at sea, as the cold fronts approach.
