| hi guys!
i'm stefano, an italian soccer coach in PE for 3 months working in some schools;
i've noticed the sometimes PERFECT conditions for windsurfing in the algoa bay, but i've never been able to find a place to hire a board and take a few lessons as well..
any advice?

hi,
yip, no more windsurfing industry (shops, schools) in PE, and not that many active sailors either. the closest is probably cape town, for lessons, and either ct, jhb, or durban for equipment.
There are some great spots for wavesailing, but unless you've got your own kit, and know what you're doing, your best bet would probably be to head to surf centre (near mcdonalds), rent/buy a surfboard and go catch some waves.

What happened to windsurfing in PE?
I remember early 90's there always used to be windsurfers blasting up and down in the bay, and if I recall they even had the world championship there round about 95. |

The 90's were good with the Continental Triple Crown and Nationals & Mistral Worlds (1995), etc, but then the same windsurfing slump that hit the rest of the world, hit PE.
Wavesailing speaking: there a bunch of us who sail regularly, and plenty more who're out there on the sunny, windy days. Probably the same as you'll find around the country, with very few newcomers/youngsters getting into the sport.
But as long as we're all having a blast, the others don't know what they're missing .... and more waves for us.
Gotta roll with the times. |
