Hi,

Just a quick update/reminder on next week's event.

Registration will be on Wednesday, from 10am to 12noon, and planning to get the first sailors/heats on the water around 2 o'clock. Depending on the forecast conditions, registration will either take place at Noordhoek Skiboat Club (if minimal breezes are forecast), or at the venue of the afternoon's sailing. Please give David (083 349 1247) or Eugene (083 654 5224) a call, to confirm registration venue, and any other details required.

Entry fee will be R200, which includes event T-shirt, braai-chow at Sat evening function, DVD of action-sailing pics by Liz (www.capesessions.com), and quality sponsored lucky draw prizes including : Ocean Spirit (Ion Wetsuits & North), Dakine, Oakley (shades) and Thule.

A conservative/rough guestimate of numbers, at the moment is probably around 25-30. So, the more sailors, the more festive the event, so spread the word, and lets have a good few days of blasting around in the waves.

Got some sailing condition pics, on the Facebook event site (http://www.new.facebook.com/event.php?eid=24470580534) and post any other queries.

cheers

dave.

Sounds like its going to be an awesome event. Now I'm really bleak, I won't be making it thanks to work.

Well done to Dave, Eugene and whoever else for putting this together. Now lets hope that spring decides to show face finally and bring some wind with it for the event and those stuck behind in the rest of the country. Besides, it hell out rude to arrive at a party empty handed...

Dave! It's looking pretty good - it's going to be an awesome event!

Do you think Gonubie/Nahoon might work nicely on Sunday 21st? If not, is it worth being in PE for Sunday? Busy scheming a little on this end..!

Cheers!

Hey Tahke,

It all depends on the wind, to make it a goodie. There was a nice west predicted for Wed, then it disappeared this morning, now it's back on windguru ... i dunno. And apparently there's a good swell period on it's way too - so it should be a good front.

I dunno anything about EL, never wavesailed there, but it is a good 3hrs on the other side of PE (out of compo range, so not sure about the value of practicing). We'll keep that off the discussion, until next year's calendar is being drafted.

And I wouldn't make a special trip for the forecast East on Sunday. Tough to call, until we're standing on the beach, hehe. Good for cross-onshore jumping practice, but it's the Wests that are the quality. We've been having so much wind, just hoping it hasn't got tired yet. Not likely that we'll show you a top quality Easterly port-tack sailing spot before the event, when the organisers are keen for starboard tack. Quite a tricky keyhole launch as well. Unless we move the CT event to July for the Big Bay NW'ers ?

If competitors have got sail numbers or unique stickers/designs, please put them on your sail to help with judging/identification. Maybe just grab a roll of duct-tape, and put a letter/number on your sail on the day. It all just helps reducing confusion.

cheers.

How about some updates on the event so far, for us poor boarders stuck behind computers at work wishing we were there.

Sorry, been on the water sailing/surfing, but now also behind me pc/desk at work, so no more excuses.
There will be varying reports, but here's my take :
Heaps of wind in PE yesterday, and was blown out early, and too strong for wave-riding, so we headed to Cannon Rocks for a jumping contest. It's not a great riding spot, and with a decent downwind rip, it was decided that 3 jumps would count in the 15 minute heats. A result was achieved with some free-sailing before and after the compo.
Eugene came out on top, followed by Mario Inthal and Scott Paton. Some spectacular loops, wipe-outs, attempts, etc were witnessed ... with 4.2m being about the average sail. Hopefully the Capies and Banana boys shoulda caught up on some sleep (after their overnight travels) before the next session, as there's a light West today, followed by a moderate SE'er this afternoon.

Strong west expected tomorrow, which isn't ideal, as it would be awesome to do some downwind riding, and with that much wind, the waveriding spots get blown out very quickly. Could even be a sailable West on Saturday, with some good swell forecast too. It would be great if that came through.

PS: Will send the postcard, with the tropical palm trees. deserted beaches, and empty line-ups, when i have to get back to the working world next week.

Cheers.

Hey all,

Howling gales at Noordhoek yesterday, and the swell picked up from 1ft (5 knots Westerly breeze) when we arrived at 9am, to mast high rollers out back by late afternoon. I haven't sailed it that strong more than a handful of times. We were waiting for the squall to pass or the wind to moderate a few knots, but not even the afternoon rain managed to do that, and it just switched more gusty and offshore later in the afternoon. Quite a few sailors went out at various stages of the day to "test" the wind strength, but the challenge was to keep control of your board on the water, and try to do some wave-riding moves.
Steve decided to venture a bit more downwind than usual, and twice ventured through the shallow Left that lurks on the other side of the channel. We informed him later that the surfspot is known as Rockies, and he showed some good skill in sailing out of a tricky situation with his rig intact.

Today's forecast looks a lot more manageable, with around 20 knots predicted and some good swell that the cold front dropped off on the way past. The plan is to hit the river mouth at 8:30, and start the heats as soon as possible. Shoud be a good mix of jumping and riding, on the pushing tide.
cheers

We managed to wrap up the compo with a waveriding session at the Swartkops river mouth yesterday, by fitting in a double elimination round on the incoming tide. Westerly was around 25 knots, and waves weren't the best ever, but the sets were still pretty sizeable for some nice turns and airs.

The event turnout was pretty good with 33 sailors, and a big thanks to the competitors who travelled from Durban, Cape Town & Jeffreys Bay, who added to the success of the event.
It was also good to see some of the PE guys still remember where the beach is, and there were some locals who really raised their game, and pulled off some good results.

Also a big shout-out to the sponsors who came to the party, with some awesome prizes. Please support these guys, as without them, these type of events will not be possible :

Ocean Spirit - Cape Town
Dakine - Cape Town
Arno - Custom Works (Board Repairs) - J'Bay
Thule
Oakley
Red Bull

Looking forward to more good fun/sailing at the next events in the series ......

Oh, and lookout for the final results that will be posted on the rankings in a few days time, as these are the guys we'll be gunning to beat ... no pressure.

Pictures from the WC camp have been uploaded to the gallery.

I just wanna give a big shout out to Kenings for providing us with transportation for the long journey to PE.

9 of us went and we had a really awesome time. The WC team left Tueday afternoon after picking up the last two scumbags at MacDonalds in Somerset West. We showed up at 4 in the morning at Pine Lodge, just a stones throw away from the awesome Noordhoek surfspot, pitched our tent in 11 degree/20 knot NW'ster, and got some much needed rest before the first day of competition.

The next day we woke up to a 5-star buffet breakfast, beautiful sunshine and nuking winds....Watch out for a full report from the event organisers and in the next issue of Gust magazine. More pictures to follow soon.
