Count me in. For the brave, you could make it there and back, like the One Design crew used to do in the 80's?

For sure! Count me in! I hear there's a reef that works in a big swell just of seal island...for anyone who's keen to mess around in the sharktank along the way...

That reef sounds like a good idea.. didn't know that there was a wave there, guess we will have to check it out.

The Blinder is a few hundred meters south east of the island ,can be quite hard to find on a high tide, it appears out of no where when you least expect it, came close to loosing a boat there a few years ago. Could be fun!

Did okes seriously do it on One Designs?! there must be some legend stories from back in the day.

Are we serious on this idea? I'm keen to do a few test runs from Glencairn/Fishhoek to muizenberg once the wind gets up again. could even put your kit on the train(ja right!)

Hey Mark,

What did Google do to the Island? Or did a mega Johnny gaps that too?!

I bumped into Piet last weekend, he seems persuadable on another Madibas Mission, although he suggested something lame about a boat taking us to the island this time around!

This crossing is going to be a fun mission.

Any idea from anyone when we are likely to sail?

And oh yes, Sailorboysteve, I used to look at pics in Freewind Magazine when I was still a Vaalie schoolboy, looking forward to my one-design December holidays in Gordons' Bay. I was too young / not organised enough / too far away, but they had a couple of races if I remember correctly. I wonder if my old purple one design can:

a) be modified to take a modern sail and mast base

b) be so large as to be un-eatable by a Great White Johnny

Hi Guys

How about holding the weekend 1&2 November open to do this? Or 20/21 December if we have no wind?

If we can set a date then I will get it put into the main event calendar with Steve Rhodes.

Once we have a date then we can do all the organizing for safety \ rubber ducks, etc...

OK, I've created a Facebook event for this to discuss dates, who wants to come, etc..

Cheers,

Mark

1/2 Nov clashes with the Durban leg of the wave tour... check the calendar under events. there are lots of other dates to choose from.

I agree we should change the date due to Durban leg of the wave tour...

Any suggestions?

Cheers,

Mark

last year there was a guy on a ski who spent something like four hours hanging onto his ski in a huge northwester, while the NSRI and the likes looked for him.
the two guys i have arranged to drive the boats are doing the Trans Aghulas, so the will not be available from the 21st Dec.till the 3rd Jan. i would like to do it before this.

Just in case this forum is still being used and not Facebook, any takers for 13/14 December?

Hi Guys, I am quite keen on this idea. Here are my thoughts. I reckon u might get a better run from Pringle Bay to Fishoek or Muizenberg as the wind will probably set in here sooner and the bearing to the dest. more of a broad reach considering the prevailing direction being SE.
Your thoughts?
What gear are you guys planning on using ? Also, I suggest talking to guys like Billy Harken who has considerable experience in organizing surfski events aroung the Peninsula to find out what the potential issues are regarding the authorities. Anyone packing a marine vhf radio ? Isuggest so, 'cause you'll loose mobile reception in the middle of False Bay, if anything it will b unreliable. Look forward to all your comments.

Might I also suggest advising the Portnet(Kalk Bay Harbor Master), NSRI, Navy, Simons Town Yacht Club and Gordons Bay Yacht Club. Depending on the size of the fleet, the folk from these organizations might take an interest and be an extra set of eyes and ears on the day. cheers !
