Waggy, I write to you asking forgiveness for having been out of the water so long, its been seven long years. Dont bother about suggesting pennance - its been meted out quite severly already. I dug the old Mistral (Eqipe) out of the board shed along with what used to be a very nice Gaastra sail (do they even exist any more?) Slid a mast in strapped a boom on and watched in horror as the whole thing fell to bits..... Faaahhhk. The kids at the dam laughed at me and said i was a ballie...... did I have to scrape the dinosaur turd off my board this morning?....that was so cool that I had an antique in such good condition....Sob sob. Fortunately a had another sail but it was a bit small to haul my lardy butt arund the dam. How can these new boards be so damn fast. Anyhow now is where id like you to start dispensing the advise. I need to wipe the sarcastic little smiles off their faces next time Im on the water. Bearing in mind its been a while since I was spraying folk on the bank with the good ole one handed duck gybes and Im not as agile as I was whilst attempting waterstarts. Is there anything you can recommend for tearing up some flat water - I dont have to ask my dad for money any more. My feeling are hurt and money must be spent. without your sage wisdom it will be another decade before I venture out again. N

Waggy - I sadly live in Johannesburg now. My family are all in Natal - Midmar dam was the old splashing ground. Did Vetch's Pier at Addington at the height of my prowess. Could waterstart, Gybe. Tack, impress the ladies with footstrap use still managed most of the above without too much trouble last attempt -(waterstarting in 12 knots was beyond me with a 5.2m2) Im currently tipping the scales at 77kgs with a BMI of 17 according to Discovery Health (bugger me with a blunt vegetable if I know what thats worth). BP this morning was 104 over 54 so you can see Im chilled on the whole. hehehe. N |

Howzit GnarlyNeil - who are the tossers who laughed at you - was it at Bronks. They must show respect !
Anyway, there's a regular crew sailing at Bronks. I weigh about 82 kg and most days sail a Ride 284 (130 liter board) or Xantos 310 (147 liter board). Big fins are the secret here and some of the blokes sail the new generation of wider 140 liter boards and 50 cm fins. We tend to use 9 sq.m sails when the wind is 10 to 15 knots. Some days we get down to 6 sq.m but not too often. You can clock 30 knots on a 130 liter board and 8 sq.m sail in 18-20 knots of wind OR 25 knots on a 140 liter board in 15 knots of wind and a 9 sq.m. Anyway, we sail as regulalry as possible at Bronks at The Catamaran Club. Join us ! |

Ride It was sadly the Gromms at Midmar. Not to worry, I have thick skin. Ive been to visit Gunther at Joluka, we had a good chat and have been looking at getting some new toys. Waggy - Im thinking the Mistral / Gaastra combination of olde will make way for either a Starboard Carve or a JP X-Cite Ride with some of Mr Prydes finest sailcloth. Probably a Saber to get me started. Any comments, should I have other considerations in mind with good bang for bucks? N

| Go for the Starboard Carve 141 or S-Type 137. JPs are for moffies like Jules. I use NP Sabres and they are awesome - no nasty cams to mess around with. Sabres don't come in sizes larger than around 8 sq.m so if you want a 9 sq.m you'll have to get something with 3 cams. Better get stuff quick - it's gonna blow at Bronkies this weekend - Saturday and Sunday !!! |

Funny that none of the Bronks crew can catch me.
Who holds the top speed at the Bronks.... "Mr J" on a "JP"
Go with the JP X-Cite Ride it works well for sailors of all levels.
I agree with the NP Sabre. But not in pink... Ride would feel you are cramping his fag style.
