I'm an intermediate sailor and would like to sail in South Africa in September and have a few questions:
- I'd like to take lessons (learn gybing, waterstarts, etc) - what will wind be like around that time? - I'll need to rent equipment - beaches and accommodations you'd recommend?
thx!

waggy:
Thanks for getting back to me and sorry to take so long to respond.
I'm planning my trip and am flexible on locations. (it's just me)
I'll go wherever I can find: - wind, decent inexpensive accommodations, and equipment rentals.
Suggestions appreciated!

| While you're in Cape Town, be sure to take a trip up to Langebaan as well. Not far. Lovely conditions as well as all the above available. |

| Wagster - Bronks cooks better than Langebaan in September (well, almost.....) - soul sailing 2007 is staying at home after getting skunked by the 'baan two years in a row. Mozambique is reputed to be good in Sept / Oct / Nov. |

| Ride, Moz is good then. Let us (KZN guys) know if you're going- I know a few of the guys are keen to join. Lots of action on the horizon, though. There is also talk of a trip to Cannon Rocks and of course Nationals possibly in Nov. And, the annual Sept fun at Sterkies. Is it happening this year? |

Hi,
Post a message if you're making a trip to Cannon's, and the PE okes will come join you guys. Or travel the extra few km's, and spend a day at some PE spots, if the wind is a bit light at Cannon's. (the west is usually a few knots stronger in pe).
Looks like awesome windsurfing conditions along the coastline this weekend ...... go big, or go home. |

Hi George
I took up windsurfing about two months ago and could not find any instructors in Johannesburg.
If you don't mind to travel a bit, go through to The Catamaran Club at Bronkhorstspruit on the weekend, the guys there are very willing to teach newbies the ins and outs of the sport. If you don't have equipment, the club has a Starboard Start board and a small 3m training rig as well as a 4.5m rig to practice with.
The guys there have gotten me onto the verge of plaining and I just go there 1 day each week, so that's basically in 8 or 9 sessions.
Best way to find out if the windsurfers will be at the dam is to check windguru: http://www.windguru.com/int/index.php?go=1&lang=eng&vs=1&sc=69398&wj=knots&tj=c&odh=3&doh=22&fhours=180 I've found that there's always a couple of guys there when windguru predicts 9 knots and up for the saturday or sunday. When it predicts 12 knots and up the windsurfers pitch up in droves ;)
Jules, I'm finally getting my harness tomorrow and my hands are itching for a 9m sail Which make of sail would you recommend (for maneuverability and power)? |
